New workplace driver training system to save money and lives

Wednesday, 10 August 2011

Arguably, driving is the most dangerous work-related activity performed by most people in Australia.

Queensland-based company Driver Safety.com.au this week will launch an online risk assessment tool providing employers with an efficient and effective means of assessing their drivers’ behaviours and level of risk on the road.

Driver Safety.com.au Chief Executive Russell White said work related motor vehicle crashes represent a significant physical, emotional and financial burden for workplaces and the community at large.

“The latest statistics reveal more than 50%  (236) of all work-related injury fatalities resulted from traffic incidents (Safe Work Australia: Work-related Traumatic Injury Fatalities 2008-09). These deaths and the thousands of work-related injuries resulting from traffic incidents are preventable. All employers have a duty of care to risk assess their individual drivers and to take action to safeguard the lives of their employees and other road users.

“No company can afford the financial or emotional cost of risky driving practices and not having a relevant education program in place that in the long term will help to establish a core set of workplace safety principles and ultimately improve a workplace’s road safety culture,” said Russell.

Driver Safety.com.au is now offering online driver risk assessments enabling companies to assess the needs of their drivers ensuring relevant and targeting driver training programs can be implemented.

Online driver risk assessments, also known as driver profiling, are by far the most efficient and effective method of identifying driver risk and meeting vital health and safety requirements.

“An overall risk profile for each driver is quickly created enabling targeted and tailored programs to be built around the actual needs of a driver rather than a blanket approach which can be very expensive with limited success. For example a person who is identified as having a high-risk driving profile would be provided with one-on-one in car training,” explained Russell.

“As companies aim to keep their costs down in continually challenging economic conditions, this online risk assessment tool provides a cost-efficient means of investigating employees’ attitudes and behaviours towards driving.”

Driver Safety.com.au has the exclusive Australian rights to the English E-Training World online assessment and training solution.

Mr White said the award winning provider of online assessment and training solutions E-Training world had enjoyed acclaim for its online driver risk assessment and e-driver training solutions and had a strong reputation for helping fleets save money and improve their safety record.

“E-Training World spearheaded the growth of online training in the English and European fleet markets, so we are proud to be introducing this successful model to the Australian market which will help companies reduce their driver training costs and in turn, prevent traffic incidents and fatalities,” he said.

Questions for companies with employees who drive whilst working:

1. Does your company have an induction for employees before they are handed a set of car keys?
2. Do all your drivers require the same training?
3. Do all your drivers pose the same level of risk to themselves and other road users?
4. What are the costs v benefits in implementing a training program?
5. Do all employees who drive a vehicle for work purposes have a valid driver’s licence?
6. Does your company have road safety guidelines or principles in place?
7. Do you know the real cost of road related incidents for your business? (eg insurance, downtime, brand reputation)
