Redland City Council lead the way in workplace driver safety

Friday, 5 August 2011

Redland City Council’s commitment to safe operations and safe-driving will be further enhanced with the launch of a driver safety program that could eventually be targeted at up to 1,100 Council employees.

Redland City Council has appointed Driversafety.com.au to develop and implement a “train the trainer” driver safety program for its Certified Training Assessors who will then roll-out safe-driving training across Council’s workplace.

Peter Gould, Redland City Council’s Service Manager – Workplace Health, Safety and Wellbeing,  said the Council actively pursued a safety first culture and was committed to providing employees with the training and resources necessary to create an injury free work environment.

“Council is committed to ensuring the health and safety of its employees and as such it takes its responsibilities relating to work-related road safety very seriously. We believe this unique and targeted training provided by Driversafety.com.au will help us to safeguard our drivers and achieve our workplace safety goals,” said Mr Gould.

Driversafety.com.au General Manager Gary Rigg said work related motor vehicle crashes represent a significant physical, emotional and financial burden for workplaces and the community at large.

“The latest statistics reveal more than 50% (236) of all work-related injury fatalities resulted from traffic incidents (Safe Work Australia: Work-related Traumatic Injury Fatalities 2008-09). These deaths and the thousands of work-related injuries resulting from traffic incidents are preventable.

“This safe-driving program will help Redland City Council to further improve its workplace road safety culture by creating confident and safe drivers,” Mr Rigg said.

Redland City Council’s safe-driving program comprises three phases starting with an online risk assessment to identify the attitudes and needs of its drivers, followed by a half-day driver safety workshop and one-on-one driver training.
