Gen Ys Take Shoes Over Safety

Tuesday, 19 February 2013
A third of younger car owners would pay more for a pair of the latest kicks than latest treads according to the latest customer satisfaction data for Car Tyre Retailers released today by Canstar Blue.

The ratings agency commissioned Colmar Brunton to survey 2500 Australians on their customer satisfaction with Car Tyre Retailers.

The results released today are from the 874 Australians within that group who have bought car tyres (not re-treads) in the past 18 months.

Canstar Blue spokesperson Rebecca Logan said the survey yielded some interesting results when it came to how Australians view their cars, driving and car tyres.

“Car tyres play an important role when it comes to vehicle safety, but shoes are something many of us covet,” Ms Logan said.

“When it comes to younger drivers in particular, one in three told us they would pay more money for a great pair of shoes than a great set of tyres.

That figure then dropped away with the Generations so it was highest in Generation Y (35%) and lowest in our Baby Boomer demographic (7%).”

One in five survey respondents said they knew they needed car tyres but couldn’t afford to change them.

When it came to dealing with the dirtier side of car tyres – disposal - almost half (43%) the survey respondents said they would pay a levy to assist the ‘green’ disposal of car tyres and would pay more for an environmentally friendly car tyre.

Together with releasing consumer insights gleaned as a result of the surveys, Canstar Blue rates products and services to help consumers make the best purchasing decisions for their needs. The ratings agency then appoints winners based on customer satisfaction levels.

The Canstar Blue customer satisfaction ratings for Car Tyre Retailers were released today with Michelin taking top spot for the second year in a row and winning the ratings agency’s most satisfied customer’s award – Car Tyre Retailers.

Ms Logan said other Car Tyre Retailers rated included Bob Jane, Pirelli, Dunlop, Goodyear, Kumho, Yokohama and Bridgestone.

“Our award-winner Michelin received Canstar Blue’s five star rating for overall customer satisfaction, life of the tyre, handling, noise and the service and advice they provide their customers,” she said.

“To top the field two years running is impressive and I congratulate Michelin for their ongoing commitment to customer satisfaction as reported by those we surveyed.”

Ratings for the Car Tyre Retailer category will contribute to Canstar Blue’s online consumer ratings resource of products rated “by consumers for consumers”.
